City -Famous Citizens

Different famous people worked and lived in Nizhny Novgorod. Nowadays there are lots of museums and monuments to the most outstanding citizens.

Yuri Vsevolodovich (1189-1238) was a Russian prince. He founded the city.

Kuzma Minin (? – 1616) – a famous merchant and military leader. In 1612 Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky called the citizens to defend the country against the Polish invasion in the early-17th century.

Dmitry Pozharsky (1578-1642) - a  military leader. Together with Kuzma Minin liberated Moscow.

Ivan Kulibin (1735-1818) – a self-taught inventor. He made watches for Ekaterina II. 

Agustin Betancourt (1758-1824) was one of the most prestigious architects in Europe. He was born in Spain, studied in France and worked in Russia. In the city he designed the Nizhny Novgorod Fair.

Nikolay Lobachevsky (1792-1856) – a famous mathematician, renowned primarily for his pioneering works on hyperbolic geometry, known as Lobachevsky geometry. Lobachevsky was born in Nizhny Novgorod.

Aleksandr Pushkin (1799-1837) – a poet and writer. He had a summer cottage in Bolshoe Boldino in the Nizhny Novgorod region. In Bolshoe Boldino Pushkin wrote  many poems and novels including Eugene Onegin.

Vladimir Dal (1801 – 1872) was one of the greatest linguists, a writer of “Big Russian Dictionary”, theologist and lexicographer. He moved to Nizhny Novgorod in 1849.

Nikolay Dobrolubov (1836 – 1861) was a Russian writer of political essays, famous literary critic. Dobrolubov was born in Nizhny Novgorod and spent here many years.

Andrey Karelin (1837-1906) was a photographer and painter. He founded a museum of arts in the city.

Mily Balakirev (1837-1910) was a famous Russian composer. He was born in Nizhny Novgorod. His mother was his first teacher of music. Balakirev made his debut in a university concert in 1856, playing the completed movement from his First Piano Concerto. This was followed a month later with a concert of his piano and chamber compositions. He was specialized in folk music. The most famous compositions are Tamara, Russia, Islamey and symphonies.

Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) was a Russian engineer-polymath, scientist and architect renowned for his pioneering works on new methods of analysis for structural engineering. Shukhov is particularly reputed for his original designs of hyperboloid towers such as the Shukhov Tower.

Fedor Bogorodsky (1895-1959) was a famous artist and poet. He took part in the Civil War.

Maxim Gorky – Aleksey Peshkov (1868 – 1936) – a famous Russian and Soviet writer, a founder of the Socialist Realism literature and a political activist. From 1932 to 1990 Nizhny Novgorod was called Gorky after its famous citizen. The most known poems are Chelkash, The Song of the Stormy Petrel,  The Mother,  My Childhood, In the World,  The Artamonov Business,  The Lower Depths Vassa Zheleznova. Nowadays there are many museums in his honor in the city. 

Fedor Shalyapin (1873-1938) – an opera singer. He passed 187 days and gave his first concerts in the city.

Yakov Sverdlov (1885-1919) was a revolutionary politician, soviet leader. 

Peter Nesterov (1887-1914) – a pilot. He was the inventor of a loop. 

Aleksandr Kasyanov (1891 – 1982) – a compositor. He was the author of the following operas: “Stepan Razin”, “Tomas Gordeev” and “Ermak”. 

Valery Chkalov (1904-1938) was a test pilot.

Nikolay Blokhin (1912 – 1993) was a surgeon and academician.

Rostislav Alekseev (1916-1980) was an engineer, boats designer. His achievements in shipbuilding were very important for further development of the industry. Besides he has invented a hydrofoil ship.

Andrey Sakharov (1921-1989) was a famous atomic physicist, dissident and human rights activist.  In 1973 Andrei Sakharov was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sakharov was detained on January 22, 1980, following his public protests against the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and was sent to internal exile in Nizhny Novgorod, a city that was off-limits to foreigners.
